Movie Review: The Last Airbender

Warning: May contain spoilers. You've been warned.

Utter disappointment. But I expected it. M. Night needs to stop making movies. Seriously.

But I suppose he's not the one to blame. My biggest beef with this movie is that it was so child-oriented. I understand that Nickelodeon is the home of the TV show, but Avatar was at it's peak like 5 years ago. Those fans have grown up and I'm sure they can (a) sit through a longer movie, (b) handle mature content like violence, death, and sensual activity. Harry Potter has proven this.

I wish the movie had more of A and B. It needed to be longer to support a storyline with my substance. The movie was made for a 2 year old to understand. It really needed to go deeper.

The movie also lacked violence, death, and sexiness! The film had great action scenes, but whenever someone was defeated, they got up and ran off. Only one bad guy was shown that died. Disappointing.

Then the sensual aspect... There wasn't much love in the movie, but apparently Twilight dude and the princess had a relationship. They're relationship wasn't shown much and it didn't have much depth. If they had more screen time and if he didn't look twice her age, I would've bought it.

I was also disappointed with the acting. If it weren't for Dev Patel (the fire guy), this movie would've been a complete failure. If I were directing the movie, everyone would have british accents. You know how all movies that take place during ancient times have people with british accents (Lord of the Rings, Troy, Prince of Persia, etc.)? This movie should've fallen into that category. It would've made the actors' performances seem ten times better.

But the movie wasn't all around bad. Like I said, the action scenes were awesome. I also liked the settings and the visual effects.... although the big flying thing and the monkey were very fake looking. And Dev Patel was a bonus. He was great in Slumdog Millionaire and he was probably the best actor in this movie.

One last thing that I hated was that they set it up for a sequel. I hate it when movies do that and they don't follow through. I know it's to early to assume that they won't make it, but this movie was a failure at the box office in the US and it was a failure with the critics. Plus it brought M. Night down even further. Why would he return to make a sequel? If they actually follow through and make the planned trilogy, I will openly admit that I was wrong (trust me, that's big).

Join the cause!

DownWithBristol

Join us in making sure that the Republican Tea Party doesn't vote Bristol Palin as the newest Dancing With the Stars Champion. She is not good at all and they are only voting for her to prove themselves. Since when does an American television game show become a political agenda?

And for the record, Bristol Palin is not a star! She is a politician's daughter. "Teen activist" is still not a star. People may then argue that everybody else has an advantage as entertainers. Um... duh. They're stars. Whether you're an actor, singer, performer, dancer, or an athlete, you're a star and you have some sort of dance advantage (keeping beat, agility, stage presence, etc.). They all had an advantage in some way.

Anyways, feel free to post this picture as your profile picture, tweet it, email it, share it, whatever!

Thanks!

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I

Warning: May contain spoilers. You've been warned.

Welcome to my official review for the latest Harry Potter movie. This is part one of end of the epic saga. Let's begin.

The Film (and the Book):

First off, could you imagine what this 2 hour and 40 minute movie would've been like if the whole book was squeezed into it? It's not even possible. What's great is that they were able to cover so much and get everything right. From George's ear, to the ministry, to the doe, to Godric's Hollow. So much was covered with so much detail and they gave each scene the appropriate amount of time needed.

In all honesty, I can't think of many differences between the movie and the book. The wedding scene, I think, was altered a lot.

The movie also paced itself very well and when the TV spots say that this is the most action-packed film, they're not lying. Ironically, when you think of this book, you think of walking around in a forest and hanging out in a tent the whole time. But now that there is a movie to show what the book describes, you can see that there actually is a lot of action in the book and these scenes come straight from the pages verbatim (okay, somewhat verbatim).

So the film goes from a slow start to a action scene to a slow part to an action scene and on and on for the remainder of the movie. It keeps you on edge, which is great.

The Acting:

What's great about series like this where the same actors stick around for multiple movies that continuously come out is that we see their progression as actors. Coming from having no acting experience whatsoever to spend 10 years perfecting characters and branching out to different film projects, you can see how Dan, Emma, and Rupert have grown. They were perfect in this movie. Dan even learned how to really cry and Emma can now make us cry without us having to see her cry.

The adult actors were great also. I'd like to mention Jason Isaac's latest portrayal of Lucius Malfoy. Throughout the films he's been in he's been the cocky, self-righteous, pure-blood father, but in this movie (as he is in the book) he perfectly re-characterized himself into a lowlife that is yearning to be on top again. The whole Malfoy family was perfect.

Some of the new characters were just okay. Bill Nighy (aka Davy Jones) as the new Minister for Magic was just okay. He was only in it for a moment, but I hated everything about him which probably means he did a great job playing that character. Brendon Gleeson's (Mad-Eye Moody) son played the eldest Weasley, Bill. Didn't care for him. He didn't look good at all. In the book, he's described as "cool and laid-back".... I didn't see that. Mundungus was dead on, so good for them (although I pictured him with long gross hair for some reason). And finally Luna's dad. I didn't care for him either. I understand that he was supposed to be weird, but in the movie he was just awkward and I'm sorry, but I didn't care for his performance.

"Going Back":

Because this movie had so much time to work with, they were able to cover (for the first time) things that are meant to have already been discussed. The Half-Blood Prince skipped an important scene involving the Gaunt Ring aka the Resurrection Stone, so in this movie they had to discuss it, although it should've already been covered.

Reviews I read before seeing the movie made it sound like the scenes where they talk about these undiscussed things were obvious, awkward, and out of place for those who know the books and for those who have just entered the series (aka idiots) were just confused more. I honestly didn't notice them, but I can understand how people can be confused with the movie if this is the first Harry Potter film they were seeing.

Mentionables:

In this "Mentionables" section (I know mentionables is not a word, but I'm going to make it one), I just want to comment on some random things I liked or disliked. These will just be brief.

I was so happy to see Fleur. Dobby's voice changed for the worse. It was higher than it used to be. The dementors were awesome in the Ministry scene. Umbridge is still a bitch and I hate her. The Bellatrix/Hermione scene was brutal to watch and listen to. I understand that's how it was in the book, but I didn't think they'd go all out for the movie. But I must say that it worked and I liked it. That Harry/Hermione scene was steamy as hell! Hermione casting away her parent's memories was heartbreaking. I wish the Dursleys had more of a farewell. Nagini was fucking scary as hell (doesn't help that I'm afraid of snakes). They did great with her and Bathilda Bagshot! I loved my Harry/Ginny moment. :) And, finally, I like that Harry's scar was constantly on his forehead. You know how some claim that the scar was never put on in every scene. Well, every time it was noticeable, it was there.

The Deaths:

When I say spoilers, I mean it. But I just want to focus on the two I found most people cried for. Dobby and Hedwig. Sadly I did not cry for Hedwig and the only reason was that she dramatically died right in the middle of the huge Seven Potters scene. I wanted to
cry, but there was too much going on to stop and mourn for her. I do wish that her death had more acknowledgement after the attack.

Then there was Dobby. I teared up for his death. I think they did it very well and I liked the setting of where he died. It was very dramatic and they did it perfectly.

The Ending (Set up for continuation):

I liked and disliked the ending. I liked it because they just ended it and then I disliked it because they just ended it. I understand that it's just supposed to flow into the next film, but I wish this movie had more of a climax to make you leave wanting more. I knew that the Malfoy Manor scene was the "final battle" of the movie, but it seemed to only be as good as the other action scenes. It didn't stand out as the final action scene of the movie. But I can see how some people are fine with the way they ended it. Because majority of the final film is going to focus on the Battle of Hogwarts, I can see how they ended Part I the way they did so the movies can flow together. (I think at some point in the distant future they will release Part I and Part II as a solid, whole movie.) I will also say that I enjoyed to very last scene where Voldemort takes the Elder Wand from Dumbledore's grave.

The Soundtrack:

Disappointed. Sorry, but nothing stuck out. The new composer said he would base a lot of the movie's music around John Williams' original composition of Hedwig's Theme. I didn't see that. To be blunt, you fail. The composer for Part II better blow my mind.

Overall:

Overall, I was very satisfied with the movie. I was very impressed that they were able to make it epic and action-packed. I also love that they took their time to get it just right because this is the first part of the last movie that needs to make a lasting impression. Would I call this my favorite Potter movie? Honestly, I'll have to see it again. Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite movie and book and it will take a lot to beat that.

I cannot wait for the next movie. Thank god it's coming out in just seven months. Hopefully it will be the biggest opening in history, burying Twilight forever. ;)

New Trailer: Winnie The Pooh

I don't know why I'm so intrigued by this. I think it's because I like that Disney is going back to it's original roots. (Thank god!)

Iron Man's Director to take on The Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom

This just keeps getting better and better!

It was recently announced that Disney is planning on making a major motion picture based on its iconic theme park, The Magic Kingdom. How? Basically doing a Night at the Museum kind of story.

That's way exciting! I just hope they do Disney World's Magic Kingdom and not Disneyland's. Disneyland's castle is ugly and fat. True.

What makes this more legit is that Iron Man's director Jon Favreau was announced as its director! This thing is really happening! I can't wait.

Love the Way You Lie Part 2!

Love the Way You Lie - Pt. II (featuring Eminem) - Rihanna

This has been unofficially out for two weeks now, but I finally found a way for you guys to hear it. Listen. It's really good and it'll be on her upcoming album.

Ugh, I watched Glee again!

Honestly, I was curious about this particular episode because it had to do with bullying. And, secretly, I wanted to see how this Kurt-boyfriend thing played out.

And I was surprised by how much I liked this episode. It was powerful stuff. And the music was decent.

If you didn't already know, I'm totally anti this show because I'm not a fan of the show choir thing. In the show, they're all misfits, but in my high school, they all thought they were the shit. The only other time I've watched this show was for the Britney Spears episode (which was a disappointment).

Anyways, I just wanted to say how much I liked this episode. Whether I'll watch the next one or not, I dunno yet. But I really liked the music in this episode, like the academy singing Teenage Dream (video above) and the girls singing Livin' on a Prayer. Hot.

I recommend watching it!

Top 50 Movies That Define the Decade (2001-2010)

Top 50 Movies of the Decade

With the year/decade coming to an end, I decided to compile a list of movies that I feel made an impression, will be remembered, and, essentially, defined this decade. The list is in alphabetical order so there is no ranking system. If there was, Harry Potter would take the top spot because it is a series that lasted throughout the entire decade.

These movies that are listed are movies that I have seen so if you're questioning why some aren't on there, it's probably because I haven't yet seen them, they didn't fall into the time restraints (2001-2010), or I just didn't like them. Haha. I also tried to be fair... so I included Twilight, much to my dismay, and I also tried to find movies from each year instead of focusing on those that were released recently. Also, each series represents one movie. For example, all 7 Harry Potter films count as one movie.

Enjoy!

Movie Review: Megamind

Warning: May contain spoilers. You've been warned.

Better than I expected. And I was expecting pretty bad...

But I think the movie, in the end, won me over.

The movie revolves around an alien, Megamind (Will Ferrell), who believes he was meant to be a super villain and battle his arch rival MetroMan (Brad Pitt). After MetroMan is defeated and Megamind grows tired of being a evil ruler, he creates a scheme to make an everyday citizen into a super hero for him to battle. And, naturally, nothing turns out that way.

What won me over the most was it's random funny moments. It was the little funny things that made this movie great. For example, when Megamind's disguised as Bernard and says to Roxanne when they're leaving the MetroMan Museum in a hurry because he's about to blow it up, that they're "remodeling, yeah, we're taking out the walls and the ceiling," I wanted to pee my pants. It was the littlest joke, but it made me laugh so hard.

The one thing I didn't like about the movie (besides Megamind's appearance) was the voices. Brad Pitt and Tina Fey were fine, but David Cross, Jonah Hill, and Will Ferrell lost me. Will Ferrell had this odd annoying accent in his voice the entire time. I understand that he is an alien, but I think Will Ferrell's normal voice would've been just fine. Jonah Hill's voice definitely went along with his character's personality, but, for some reason, it didn't work for me. It didn't seem to flow. Maybe I'm just crazy. And finally, David Cross... Eh... I just don't like him so yeah. Done.

I'm very surprised by its opening weekend success. It brought in a whopping $47 million and got the top spot with Due Date coming in second with $33 million! In all honesty, I thought this movie was going to flop, but it was really good. And I didn't see it in 3D, so its not necessary (although they often throw things at the screen for 3D purposes).

90 Second Previews on iTunes!!

This is random, yet exciting.

iTunes will soon allow customers to listen to 90 second previews of songs rather than the tiny 30 seconds.

How annoying is that to be searching for a song and not know if it's the one because the preview was too short! It's true. It's happened to everyone.

As long as the song is over 2 minutes and 30 seconds, it will have a 90 second preview. I'm not sure if it'll stay at 30 or go to 60 if it's under that 2:30 mark. :/

Anyways this is great random news!

Unacceptable!

2010 House of Reps Results

I'm sorry, but this is unacceptable.

There is too much red meaning that there are too many narrow-minded, faith-based, white people in this country.

I understand that people believe Obama is doing a less than satisfactory job, but doing an extreme U-turn to the other end of the pole is not going to get this country back on track either.

An even amount of each party is probably for the best, but I have a feeling that this country will be in a stalemate for the next two years. Tea Party Republicans (idiots) have claimed that they will NOT budge on any of their issues. Excuse me? I'm sorry, but that's unacceptable. We need to compromise on what is best for this country and just because you were elected, doesn't mean that the entire country follows your beliefs.

For those of you questioning what Obama has done in his first two years, you can visit WhatTheFuckHasObamaDoneSoFar.com.

In Illinois, we are still waiting for the official announcement on whether Pat Quinn (D) or Bill Brady (R) will be our Governor (Quinn is currently in the lead) and whether Mark Kirk (R) or Alexi Giannoulias (D) will take Obama's senate seat (Kirk is projected to win at this point).

Meanwhile in Minnesota, homophobic, Jesus-preaching, gay-bullying-loving Tom Emmer (obviously R) is just behind Mark Dayton (D) in the race for Governor. Tell you what, I will be okay if Mark Kirk wins Obama's senate seat as long as Tom Emmer is not elected for anything! That man should be locked up. He's for discrimination against gays. Thats discrimination!!

At this point I just want this party rivalry to end. It's like high school and it's a popularity contest between the stuck-up football jock and the openminded drama star... bad analogy, but you get the point.

I just want the country back on track financially, equal rights for EVERYBODY, and to end religious influence in the government (newsflash: there's more than just one religion in this country).
