Disney went through a time when they were forcing out movies that were disappointing at the box office. Examples of these films include Oliver & Company, The Great Mouse Detective, and probably Disney's worst movie release EVER, The Black Cauldron. A large contributing factor is that after Fox and the Hound, 12 of Disney's key animators left the company.
After much hard work, they got back into the swing of things and released 9 hit films in a row. These films are:
1. The Little Mermaid (1989)
(<- The Rescuers Down Under 1990)
2. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
3. Aladdin (1992)
4. The Lion King (1994)
5. Pocahontas (1995)
6. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
7. Hercules (1997)
8. Mulan (1998)
9. Tarzan (1999)
Dinosaur, The Emperor's New Groove, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire followed and were successful, but not successful enough as the other nine. However, when they released Treasure Planet and Home on the Range, the Renaissance Era was officially over. I haven't even seen them. All I hear is terrible things about those two movies.
The Rescuers Down Under can sometimes be part of the renaissance, but its financial success could not even begin to compare to the others. Haha.
Disney is trying to get back to their original roots and released The Princess and the Frog which wasn't terrible, but no Beauty and the Beast! They think they lost audience interest in the film by having 'Princess' in the title. Boys apparently thought it was girly. Because of that, the company changed the title of their next major motion picture from Rapunzel to Tangled.
I don't know why I'm talking about this topic. It's just interesting to me. Came from one of my random Wikipedia searches. :) Hope it was interesting!
